Colonial southern beauty on a knoll on a huge private corner lot
A trip to Louisiana inspired noted architect Kevin A. Clark to create a piece of southern beauty on a knoll on this private corner lot on Ledge Avenue, surrounded and walled in by 20 plus ft of Chinese Elms, Ficus and Podocarpus trees. Placing this Southern Colonial house diagonally on the 21,144 square foot lot ensured spacious front and back yards. The view from the front porch, which spans the length of the 7,397 square foot home, inspires serenity as you look out at a 200-year-old Stone Pine tree. Walk through the French doors of the main bedroom onto the balcony above and if it’s July 4th you’ll see fireworks from Lakeside Country Club half a block away. While there is a ‘grandness’ to a home with a central staircase and twelve-foot ceilings, what the owners wanted even more was warmth. Hardwood floors of European White Oak and Walnut inlays achieved this -- in the living room, formal dining room, butlers’ pantry and den. So did the four oversized wood burning fireplaces throughout the house. A fifth wood burning fireplace can be found next to the pool/spa and built-in barbecue. The coffered ceiling den, made from Southern Knotty Pine with an English Polish wax finish is a go-to place for movies and big viewing events.
While maintaining traditional beauty inherent to a southern home, what the architect created was a modern open floor plan. This is especially seen in the back of the house. Light floods through kitchen windows onto countertops of Carrera marble, a wood island with second sink and an eight-foot-long copper hood presiding over the Viking range and adjoining barbecue. The dining area (next to the kitchen) offers a window seat with a view out back to magnolia and eucalyptus trees as well as the gated pool area surrounded by ornamental pear trees. The flow from kitchen to dining area continues into the Family Room which is appointed with cabinets of painted Southern Pine and beams of distressed Solid Douglas Fir. There are 4 bedrooms. Downstairs is the guest room en suite, with French doors to the front porch. Upstairs are three bedrooms, two with their own bathrooms and walk in closets. The main bedroom suite offers a wood burning fireplace and a grand walk-through closet with two separate doorways leading to the bathroom. Along with a feeling of warmth, touches of whimsy abound. One such place is the reading alcove upstairs between bedrooms -- done up in black and white checked MacKenzie-Childs wallpaper, accented by striped reading lamps. As with any proper southern house, this one offers a basement. Walk down the stairs from the dining area and you’ll find a workout room, bonus room and laundry area which can also be accessed from the three-car garage. Finally, while the front porch beckons for bourbon and cigars... stepping off the back porch, one can pick oranges, figs, apples and creamy avocados grown from a tree sprung from a seed, planted years ago by a little girl who lived here. There is magic at 4261 Ledge Ave where the house stands ready to inspire new stories of joy.
